Mounjaro (tirzepatide)
A once-weekly prescription injection, dispensed by GPhC-registered pharmacy, supervised monthly.
What it is
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly prescription injection licensed in the UK for both type 2 diabetes and weight management. It acts on two receptor pathways — GLP-1 and GIP — which together reduce appetite, slow gastric emptying, and improve the body's response to food.
It currently has the strongest weight-loss outcomes in head-to-head trials among the GLP-1 family of medications. In the SURMOUNT-1 study, participants on the highest dose lost on average around 20% of their baseline body weight at 72 weeks. Real-world results vary, often considerably.
What it treats
- Adults with a BMI ≥ 30, or BMI ≥ 27 with a weight-related comorbidity
- Type 2 diabetes (licensed indication; not the primary reason most aesthetic clinics prescribe it)
How it works
- 1 Initial consultation with our prescriber — full medical history, BMI, blood pressure, and where indicated, blood tests.
- 2 If eligible, a starting dose of 2.5 mg once weekly is prescribed.
- 3 Dose titrates upward over months — 5 mg, then 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, 15 mg — as tolerated.
- 4 Monthly review appointments. We do not increase dose if side effects are not manageable.
- 5 Mounjaro is dispensed in a multi-dose pen by our partnered GPhC-registered pharmacy.
What to expect
Appointment time
Self-administered weekly injection at home. Monthly clinic review.
Downtime
None medically. Some clients describe the first 2–3 weeks of any new dose as the toughest — nausea, fatigue, reduced appetite.
How it feels
A small subcutaneous needle (under the skin of the abdomen or thigh). Most clients describe it as a quick prick.
Aftercare
Inject at the same day each week, varying the site. Avoid very fatty or heavy meals in the 24 hours after injection. Hydrate well.
Results visible
Reduced appetite from week 1–2. Meaningful weight loss from month 2 onward.
How long they last
Ongoing, as long as the medication is appropriate. Weight regain is common after stopping without sustained lifestyle change.

FAQs
How much weight will I lose?
Trial data shows an average of around 20% of body weight loss over 72 weeks at the highest dose. Real-world results vary — some clients lose more, some less. Adherence and lifestyle changes alongside the medication matter as much as the dose.
Side effects — what should I expect?
Nausea, fatigue, reduced appetite, constipation or loose stools, and occasionally heartburn are most common in the first 2–3 weeks of any new dose. Most settle. Severe or persistent side effects mean we hold or step down the dose.
How is Mounjaro different from Wegovy or Saxenda?
Mounjaro acts on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors — Wegovy and Saxenda act on GLP-1 alone. Mounjaro has stronger trial data for weight loss; Wegovy and Saxenda have longer real-world use. Our prescriber will recommend based on your medical history and goals.
Where does the medication come from?
Mounjaro is manufactured by Eli Lilly and dispensed by our partnered GPhC-registered pharmacy following our prescriber's prescription. We do not source medication from any other route.
Can I just inject at home?
Yes — the pen is designed for at-home use and we teach you how. Many clients are nervous before the first injection and report it being easier than expected.
What happens when I stop?
Appetite returns to its baseline. Without sustained lifestyle change, weight regain is common. We work with you on the diet and movement side specifically because that is the durable part.
